Biological treatment relies on microorganisms' ability to utilize dissolved organic matter in wastewater for their sustenance. During their life processes, microorganisms convert part of the organic matter into water, carbon dioxide, and various ions like nitrites and sulfates, while another part is used to form biomass.
Wastewater Treatment
Biological treatment systems can be broadly divided into two main types:
The first type includes filtration and irrigation fields—natural areas where treatment occurs through soil layers, as well as biological ponds where self-purification of water bodies takes place
The second type includes biofilters and aeration tanks. Biofilters are tanks with filtering material covered by biofilm that adsorbs and oxidizes organic pollutants. Aeration tanks mix wastewater with activated sludge containing microorganisms that consume organic matter.

This method is crucial for municipal wastewater treatment and uses both aerobic and anaerobic technologies. In aerobic systems, microorganisms thrive in activated sludge and biofilms.
A biofilter consists of filter media (circular or rectangular), a wastewater distribution device, a drainage system for treated water, and an air distribution system. As wastewater passes through, the biofilm absorbs impurities and organic matter, promoting biomass growth.

Dead biofilm cells are washed out and removed in secondary settling tanks. Oxygen is supplied naturally or mechanically to the filter media
